The invention of the railway changed post-industrial societies forever, revolutionising human communications and creating new flows of mobility. Because of that, from very early, the first railway engineers wanted to expand the influence of the railway everywhere, even over the peaks, massifs and terrains with complex orography, despite the great technical challenge that this represented. Thus, in parallel with the advances of the conventional railway, the rack railway is a story of experimentation and total confidence in the capabilities of technology to reach some of the most special places in the world.
In this work, divided into several volumes that will be published successively, we review and describe each and every one of the rack railway lines that exist and have existed throughout the world (history, infrastructure, technical characteristics, motor and rolling stock...) offering, in addition, an overview of the main and fundamental aspects of this spectacular means of transport. The work is published in four languages (Catalan, Spanish, English and German), and the first volume is dedicated to Switzerland, the country with the largest number of mountain railways in the world.
